Quick answer: to keep roses fresh longer in the UAE, trim 2–3 cm off each stem at an angle, put them in a spotless vase with cool water and flower food, change the water every day or two, and keep the vase out of direct sun and away from AC vents and fruit. With this routine, fresh roses usually stay beautiful for about a week, and often longer.
800petals has been arranging roses since 1992, and these are the same steps professional florists use. They take two minutes a day and make a real difference, especially in summer.
Why roses fade faster in the UAE
Three things shorten a rose’s vase life here:
- Heat. Warm water grows bacteria quickly, and bacteria block the stems so the flower can’t drink.
- Strong sunlight. A sunny windowsill heats the vase and makes petals lose water faster.
- Dry, air-conditioned air. A cold draught from an AC vent pulls moisture out of the petals and leaves.
Every tip below tackles one of these.
7 steps to make your roses last longer
- Unwrap and trim straight away. Don’t leave the bouquet in its wrapping. Cut 2–3 cm off each stem at a 45° angle with sharp scissors or a knife. The angled cut gives the stem more surface to drink from.
- Strip the lower leaves. Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line. Leaves in water rot and feed bacteria. You can leave most thorns on, because removing them opens small wounds.
- Use a clean vase. Wash it with hot soapy water first. A vase that looks clean can still hold bacteria from the last bouquet.
- Add cool water and flower food. Fill the vase about two-thirds with cool (not icy) water. If your bouquet came with a flower food sachet, stir it in.
- Change the water every day or two. In summer, daily is best. Each time, trim another 1 cm off the stems so they keep drinking.
- Choose the right spot. Keep roses out of direct sun and at least a metre or two from AC vents, the TV and kitchen appliances. Keep them away from the fruit bowl too: ripening fruit gives off ethylene gas, which makes flowers age faster.
- Give them a cool night. If you can, move the vase to the coolest room in the house overnight.
How to revive drooping roses
If a rose head starts to bend, it usually has an air bubble or blockage in the stem. Re-cut the stem under running water, then lay the whole rose in a sink or tray of cool water for 30–60 minutes. Put it back in fresh water afterwards. Many roses perk up within an hour.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving flowers in a hot car, even for a short trip to the shops.
- Topping up old water instead of replacing it.
- Placing the vase next to a window that gets afternoon sun.
- Crowding too many stems into a narrow vase, so they can’t all reach the water.

Frequently asked questions
With daily water changes and a cool spot out of the sun, fresh roses usually last about a week, and often longer. In a hot room with old water they can fade in two or three days.
Flower food is the better choice, because it contains both food for the flower and something to slow bacteria. Sugar on its own also feeds bacteria, so skip it if you can’t change the water often.
For a few hours, yes, as long as there is no fruit in the fridge. Florists keep roses cool to slow them down. Don’t leave them there for days, and avoid the coldest shelf.
Fresh roses in a box usually sit in wet floral foam. Add a little water to the foam every day or two so it never dries out.
